Bluecrop is one of the best known mid-season berry producers. It sets giant blueberries on very sturdy, upright stems. Bluecrop is also a great Blueberry to plant as a pollination partner to other mid-season varieties. Even though Blueberries are self-pollinating, having at least one other variety that blooms at the same time will increase yields of fruit.
Bluecrop is at home in the kitchen garden as an edible plant or in the ornamental garden. The early spring foliage and fall colors are wonderful and very underrated in the ornamental garden. The long straight stems of Bluecrop also add winter interest to the garden while giving non-migrating birds a spot to land in snowy periods.
Bluecrop Blueberry Care
Blueberries thrive in full sun, but will tolerate early morning or late afternoon shade well. An average texture soil with an acidic pH of 4.5-5.5 will give the foliage a deep color and help the fruit to form properly. Well drained and consistently moist soil is the best. Extra irrigation will be needed during extended hot and dry spells.Â
Pruning is not needed often. A quick cutback of any dead, dying, diseased or diagonal stems early in the spring should be enough to help Bluecrop to keep its shape. After a couple years all of the dead stems should be cut out to the ground to encourage vigorous new growth. A fertilizer formulated for acid loving plants should be applied early in the spring as the new leaves emerge, before flowering starts. Mulching plants with organic compost will help to make the soil more moisture retentive.
Bluecrop Blueberry Spacing
Bluecrop Blueberry has a height of 5-6 feet and a width of 5-6 feet. When planting these Blueberries to be used as edible crops, space the shrubs so that there is space all around for easy berry picking. Space the bushes at 7-8 feet on center. Blueberries plants for ornamental use in an informal hedge or part of the landscape can be placed 4 feet on center.
